The Pink Lady Food Photographer of the Year competition is a prestigious platform for food photographers worldwide. This is my first time participating, so this guide offers everything you need to navigate the ins and outs of this incredible contest, from understanding the categories and judging criteria to crafting a winning submission.

These are some of the categories you can participate. Please BE SURE TO pay close attention to the competition rules for the different categories. For example, I submitted two photos for Food Stylist, but I just realised I had to submit five images for that specific category. So, please don’t be silly like me and check the rules of the contest closely.

        • Award: Food on the Table: Stunning stills featuring plated dishes.

        • Award: People & Food: Showcasing the human connection with food.

        • Award: Street Food: Capturing the energy and authenticity of street food culture.

It is a good idea to check the winning images to know what is expected.  Also, it is good to know that some categories will have a monetary award, and others will be a recognition award. All the winners will be showcased at a particular function in a London Museum, so a lot of exposition for your business. 

Please don’t be afraid to participate if you are not a professional photographer; check the amateur sections, and they even have some categories that must be shot by your phone. So you can check all the work you have produced last year and select your best work to participate. After choosing the best images, select which category suits you better if you are an amateur or student.

    • Join the community: Engage with other food photographers online and participate in workshops or challenges.

    • Practice makes perfect: Continuously hone your skills and experiment with different styles and techniques.

    • AI-generated images are a no-no for now; you can only use some editing AI things but not the whole images.

    • Copyright holders: Be aware to submit only the photograph you have the copyrights to avoid any problem in the future, or if you are submitting a past client shoot, have a release from them. If so, you have to put the image credit and the date your client published the photo. Also, if your image has a model other than you, please check that you have signed model releases. Check your local laws about it.
